Updated 05/14/2014 | Published 05/13/2014

Question:

Good day, I am trying to understand how much weight I can carry / tow with my Toyota Yaris. I was looking at your hitch for this car and it says I cant carry anything heavier than 200 pounds. I was hoping to use a hitch like this but dirt bike weights above 200 pounds. it wont work then right? thank you

You are correct, your dirt bike and carrier would exceed the weight rating of any trailer hitch for the Toyota Yaris. There is also important information that you should be aware of when carrying additional cargo with your Yaris. In the United States market, Toyota recommends against installing a trailer hitch for any type of hitch mounted accessory such as a bike, motorcycle or cargo carrier, at least on models from 2005 to the present.

In the Canadian market, Toyota allows for the installation of a trailer hitch, but they give the vehicle a maximum tongue weight capacity of 70 lbs, which is well below the 200 lb tongue weight capacity of Class I trailer hitches. If you were to install a trailer hitch on your Yaris, I would not recommend exceeding 70 lbs because that is the rating that Toyota actually gives for the Yaris.

For your situation, I recommend looking into a larger vehicle such as a truck or SUV to haul your dirt bike.
