Will Trailer Hitch Affect Backup Alarm and Side Assist on 2014 Audi Q5 TDI with Bike Carrier

Updated 05/06/2014 | Published 05/02/2014

Question:

I am interested in installing a hitch on the a 2014 Audi Q5 TDI. How does this effect the back up alarm and Audi side assist particularly when using my bicycle carrier attached to the hitch? According to the window sticker the car is pre-wired for a hitch.

With no bikes loaded on your rack, the sensors would not detect the rack and go off. With bikes loaded, most likely the sensors would sense the bikes. The sensors are only active when you are in reverse though. So it's not like you would have to deal with them going off all the time. You would just have to be extra careful when backing up and be mindful of the additional length of the bikes and rack off the back of your vehicle.

A bike rack is not likely to affect your side assist, although my contacts at Draw-Tite and Curt could not guarantee it since they do not test for that.

For a hitch for your 2014 Q5, I recommend the Draw-Tite # 75940. I have linked an installation video as well as the written installation instructions. Drilling is not required for installation, but the exhaust must be lowered and lower fascia removed temporarily. All mounting hardware is included with this hitch.

Additionally, I have included a link to all trailer hitches that are a fit for the 2014 Audi Q5.
