Question:
I have a 16 ram that has a tow package but when I turn my running lights on, or my hazards on, the trailer brake disconnectedinch pops up, all the lights work on the trailer just not the brakes. And it sometimes does it in reverse to. I know its not the trailer because I tried it on another trailer and had the same issue. Checked fuses and they are good, and checked the truck pins they all put out about 12 volts. What can I check next?

Hey Michael,
The first thing I'd check is the ground both on the truck's 7-way because a weak ground causes all kinds of goofy issues. I'd just splice into the back of the factory 7-way and run a 10 gauge wire # 10-1-1 to the vehicle frame with a ring terminal # 44-5356A and self-tapping screw. I'd also check that there's not bare or damaged wires touching each other behind the 7-way.
From there I'd start to question that the brake controller is properly functioning. You've already tested it on a second trailer with the same issue so we know the issue lies with the truck. You could try installing a new brake controller to rule out it being the cause of the issue.
If you want to go this route then I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller # RED24FR and the Redarc Plug-and-Play Wiring Harness # 331-TPH-020. This brake controller has the smallest footprint on the market for a nice factory look and the plug-and-play harness makes installation fast and easy.

It's a new brake controller. When I test my voltage with a meter it shows 27volts on my plug and all my wires and connections seem fine. Is there a way to lower my voltage? I have not found anything online about it.
