Hitch-Mount Cargo Carrier to Transport Lawn Mower on 2006 Honda Accord with Class I Hitch

Updated 04/30/2014 | Published 04/26/2014

Question:

I was looking at putting this carrier MaxxTow 29x49 Cargo Carrier w/ 60inch Pivoting Ramp - 2inch Hitches - Aluminum - 500 lbsinch On my Honda Accord. Would that work? I just need something to easily transport a push mower. I really like the aluminum frame and ramp, but noticed that Accords have a class 1 rating and this model has class 3 or 4 rating. I dont fully understand the class system. Thanks for your help.

Hitch receivers and the accessory items that they can carry (cargo carriers, bike racks, etc) all have Class ratings to designate their general capacity and size. The linked article will explain.

Class I hitches are a 1-1/4-inch size and are suited for light-duty applications. All of the hitches offered for the Honda Accord can be seen on the link provided; all are 1-1/4-inch Class I receivers rated for a maximum downward force (tongue weight) of 200-lbs. This tongue weight figure means that the combined weight of the carrier you choose and your lawn mower cannot exceed 200-lbs total.

With a Class I hitch you need to select a Class I cargo carrier to ensure proper fit and comparable capacity. All of the Class I carriers we offer are shown on the provided link. Unfortunately none of the four Class I carriers has a ramp and this is due to the additional weight a ramp would contribute; this means you will need to lift your mower onto the carrier.

I suggest the Curt 20 x 48-Inch carrier # C18145 for its lighter weight and angled and adjustable shank. These features will let you retain approximately 158- of the 200-lb hitch capacity for the mower and help maintain safe ground clearance at the back of the carrier for going up and down inclines.

For safe transport of the mower you might consider some cargo control items, such as ratcheting straps like # E01418 from Erickson.
