How Can I Wire A Small License Plate Camera To A 2011 Ford Ranger

Question:

I have small rear camera mounted to the top of the license plate. I also have a flat 4-pin trailer connector that I would like to get power to the camera. How do I do that? I was thinking that I could use a compatible connector and only hook the camera to the hot connector. BTW, my truck is 2011 Ford Ranger and the camera only has one wire.

Hello Walt. Is this camera intended to be used for backing up only? If so, you will need to wire it to the reverse light circuit on your truck. There is no custom fit connector made for this purpose though. You will need to use a tester like part # PTW2993 and probe the wires as a helper shifts the transmission in reverse. The wire that shows power when the backup lamps come on is the reverse lamp circuit. You can simply use a butt connector to attach the wire. The diagram below will show you an example.

My apologies. I gave some wrong info. The camera is wireless to the screen. Just need power at the rear license plate. Since I have a four wire flat plug already there, can I use that for just the one wire to the camera?

@Walt Yes you can. In this case you will want to tap into the running light wire. Should be the brown wire on the 4-flat. This will mean the camera is on anytime the vehicle is on.
