What Is the Height of the Malone Profile 18B Rooftop Cargo Box?

Question:

Hi, does anyone know how high above the roof bars this box would be? I see the exterior height dimension of 15.75, but I can also see in the video and from one QandA that it dips down about 1inch from the top of the roof bars too. I have about 15 and 5/8inch clearance in my garage when the door is open and want to be sure this will fit. Thanks!

From the lowest point to the highest point on the Malone Profile18B Rooftop Cargo Box # MPG911 it measures 15-3/4" tall.

Any additional height from your crossbars would have to be added after the fact as we won't have that information. Seeing as though you only have 15-5/8" total of clearance I'd say it's safe to say that you won't be able to keep the cargo box installed when you park your car in the garage.

The Thule racks are rated on their website for "height off crossbar" and "overall height". When you are trying to fit the overhead clearance getting in the garage the dimension needed is height off crossbar. This is because the boxes are generally shorter in the area the box sits on the crossbar to help the box ride down low to the roof. According to the Thule website, the Thule Motion XXL Low is 15.2 inches tall, but only 13 inches off crossbar. It would easily fit into a garage with 15.75 inches of clearance. By coincidence I also have a little bit less than 16 inches of clearance from the bar on my Expedition to the garage door. Can you please provide the correct answer to Michael P's question? How high above the crossbar is the Malone Profile 18B? I'm guessing it is around 13.5 inches based on pictures and the overall height of 15-3/4, but I want to be sure before I buy one.

@JohnI John, so I did a bit of digging around and it looks like the "height off crossbar" measurement Thule is giving is the internal height of the box. To me it doesn't make sense that the "height off crossbar" is somehow shorter than the boxes overall height. I believe they measured from the inside of the box to the top of the box, and called that the height off crossbar. What it sounds like you're looking for is how tall the box is when on top of crossbars; Which would be the same thing as the boxes overall height, plus the height of your crossbars. So if the height of the box is 15 3/4", and you have 3/4" tall bars, then the overall height would be 16.5" - meaning it's 16.5" from the bottom of your crossbars to the top of the box. If I'm still not understanding let me know, but that's what I'm thinking.
