Question:
I just purchased a 2014 crv ex awd and want to put a hitch on it. I was looking at the draw tite class 3 with its tongue max at 525lb. How accurate is this number and what is it based on? My manual says 1500lb towing and 10 of total weight for tongue. Im afraid If i use my 330 lb stand up jetski on a hitch hauler I planned to buy, it would damage my car. Please advise ps- can you explain to me why one class 3 is rated at 350lb while another is 550lb? Thanks Here is a pic of my friends ridgeline using the hitch hauler with his jetski

We do carry hitches that would be a fit for your 2014 Honda CRV. I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch, part # C13119. This is a Class lll trailer hitch with a 2 inch receiver opening. I have attached a link to an installation video of this hitch on a 2014 Honda CR-V.
The numbers you see for the weight capacity of a trailer hitch are not based on the vehicle they are installed on. They are based on the strength of the hitch alone. Although many times a hitch may have a rating of several hundred lbs, the vehicle it is installed on does not have the ability to tow or carry that amount of weight.
Typically, the weight stated in the owners manual is used when you want to determine how much weight you can have on the tongue of the trailer you are attaching to the hitch. An example would be if the owners manual said that the towing capacity is 1500 lbs, you would use 10 to 15 per cent of that weight to determine how much weight can be on the tongue of the trailer, or 150 to 225 lbs.
If you are purchasing a trailer to carry your jet ski, you would want to keep the tongue weight below the 225 lbs to make sure you are within the suggested tongue weight capacity for your CR-V. I have attached a link to a help article that explains how to determine trailer tongue weight.
