I have a 2018 Chevy Silverado 1/2ton with a 5foot 6 inch box. I purchased the Curt 16000 Slider. When I slide it it is touching the tail gate and I can’t turn it it will damage my tailgate. Is there any way I can make this work without removing the tailgate?

The problem you are having is due to the Curt E16 slider hitch part # 16516 not being the correct slider hitch for a 5-1/2 foot bed truck. The shortest bed this hitch can be used on without interference is 6 foot. You'd need a hitch that can slide about twice as far like the Demco Hijacker Autoslide part # DM8550040 which would fit the same rails as what you have now and slides 22-1/2 inches.
There isn't a way to make the Curt you have now work.
