Can Fulton Fold-Away Coupler Hinge be Welded To Aluminum Trailer Tongue
Updated 10/11/2022 | Published 10/09/2022 >
Question:
Hello, I saw the answer for the use of the Fulton bolt on coupler on aluminum trailers being because of the bolts used but I was wondering why the weld on version is also not recommended for use with aluminum trailers? Since there wouldnt be any bolt shoulder issues caused by the thickness of the aluminum would the weld on version work then? Thanks

Both the # FHDPW230300 (for 2"x3" tongue) and # FHDPW330300 (3" x 3") are not for use on aluminum trailer frames. Aluminum trailers do not have the strength for a hinge kit which is why Fulton recommends against it. My recommendation is to check with your trailer manufacturer to see if they say a coupler hinge can be used. More than likely the answer is no, but it doesn't hurt to check.
Also, aluminum and steel do not weld together easily. It takes a special process, so you would need a certified welder who is familiar with that process to ensure it is done correctly if the manufacturer approves it. You would also need to make sure that your trailer tongue material thickness is between .188" and .120".
