How To Center Kayak On Roof of 2012 Honda Pilot

Updated 05/17/2022 | Published 05/16/2022

Question:

I have a 2012 Honda Pilot with factory rails and the Sportrack SR1002 or is it SR1005? I dont have the box any longer. The Honda Pilot has short side rails so the crossbars are mounted over the rear 1/3 of the vehicle. This means that to center my canoe I need to have it hang off the back of the vehicle rather than extending it over the hood. I would like to know if the Short Roof Extender or anything can be added to the bare roof over the drivers/passengersfoot front section so that another crossbar can be added and the canoe can be carried further forward and balanced over the vehicle itself. This would mean having three attachment points on the roof. Or, would a hitch rack like a Thule Goal Post be my only option? I do also carry a Thule Apex 5 bike carrier and would prefer not to interfere with that. Also - can longer bars be added to the SportrackSR1002? I would like 70inch bars and canoe stops? Thanks!

The best option to properly stabilize a canoe on the roof of a 2012 Honda Pilot would be with a hitch mounted load extender like the Erickson Big Bed Load Extender for Truck Bed or Roof part # EM07600-07601 which will be secured into the trailer hitch. The front half of the canoe will be secured on the roof mounted rack and then the rear half over the load extender.

Unfortunately, we don't have an option to add a third crossbar.
