Thinking about Thule Xsporter Pro Adjustable-Height Truck Bed Ladder Rack + On the Roof Rack to get an effective multiple point carrying for longer loads. I could adjust the Xsporster tot the right height when needed. Thoughts about that? Which Thule on roof system would be most compatible with this idea? I have a 12 Tacoma/composite bed, sliding rail system with no racks on roofs right now.

The Thule ladder rack # TH500xt is listed as a fit for all models of the 2012 Toyota Tacoma. For a roof rack a lot depends on the cab style. I have included a link to the Thule roof racks that fit your truck. You will just need to look at the ones that match your cab style.
If it were me, I would choose a system with the square bars because they are less expensive.
Another option, if your truck has a 2 inch trailer hitch, would be to use the Rhino-Rack T-Load, # RTL002. This will serve the same purpose as adding a roof rack but instead of being in front of the ladder rack it will be behind it. I have linked the instructions for you to view.
