Instructions for Adjusting Time Delayed Brake Controller for Proper Setting To Tow Multiple Trailers

Updated 09/25/2009 | Published 09/24/2009

Question:

I have a Valley brake controller in my 05 Dodge Ram truck. I cannot find my manual for it so I do not remember how to set for best results. I have an output dial on the left side and a ramp time dial on the right. I will tow different trailers and need to adjust for each. Can you help me?

It sounds like you have the Valley Journey Electric Brake Controller, item # V52650. Prior to towing a trailer you will need to adjust the output power to the trailer. This needs to be done each time you tow a different trailer, when the load on the trailer changes significantly and when road conditions change significantly.

To set the power you depress the brake, adjust the power half way and adjust the ramp time switch to the lowest position. Then in an open and controlled area drive about 20 mph and slowly apply the manual lever until the trailer brakes fully engage. If the brakes lock up reduce the power and if braking was insufficient, increase the power. Repeat these steps until you get the desired performance.

Once the power is set then you need to adjust the Ramp Time by doing slow speed stops, with the vehicle brake pedal, and adjust until you get smooth stopping between the vehicle and trailer.
