Question:
I see it says 2 bike max. We have 3 very light bikes that are less than the weight limit. Is that ok?

I have a solution for carrying 3 bikes with your 2016 Mazda 3 hatch back but the Class I hitch can't handle carrying more than 2 bikes due to the added weight and leverage of the third bike that stick out further.
You'd instead need a 2 inch hitch like the EcoHitch part # 306-X7305 which would easily handle a three bike rack like the Swagman Trailhead part # S63365.
