Question:

Hello, I noticed that the Tesla hitch has a different weight for max tongue weight and vertical weight. Can you please advise whaf is the max weight the hitch can handle if I am going to attach a cargo box to it ? Teslas max rating for the Vertical max is 120lbs and the tongue weight is 500lbs. Can you please help me clarify the difference between the 2 vertical lid and tongue weight as well as the vertical for your hitch ? Thanks

I have some info that can help, see below:

When it comes to vertical weight and tongue weight, those two terms mean the same thing in regards to hitch receivers.
The Draw-Tite linked above has a max tongue weight of 750 pounds and a max trailer weight of 5,000 pounds.

Simply put you can have up to 750 pounds pushing down on the ball of the hitch receiver while it pulls a 5,000 pound trailer.

If you want to use an accessory like a cargo-box that is well within the limits of this hitch, see below:

I'll use the Yakima EXO for an example, it has two cargo boxes. The top can hold 80 pounds and the bottom one can hold 100 pounds, at the same time. The carrier itself weighs 28 pounds, you have 208 pounds of total weight on the tongue and still have not met half the max tongue weight limit. And this keeps you 12 pounds away from the 220 lbs. max rear load limit of the Model X.

NOTE: Tesla recommends you never load more than 220 lbs (100 kg) on the upper trunk compartment or more than 175 lbs (80 kg) in the lower trunk compartment.
