In order to determine the wiring functions on your 1997 Ford F-150, you are going to have to use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 if needed. Have someone run through the various functions in the truck while you test with the circuit tester.
The problem is that vehicle manufacturers can use any color wire they want for any purpose, and it changes from year to year and sometimes even within the same year (I have seen it). Because of this there is no standard and testing is the only way to determine function for sure.
On the Hopkins 7-Way, # HM40985, the wire functions are as follows:
Green: right turn signal
Yellow: left turn signal
White: ground
Brown: taillights and side marker lights
Blue: electric brake
Red: auxiliary power
Purple: backup/reverse lights
I have also included a link to our FAQ article on wiring harnesses that includes diagrams of various types of trailer connections. You will want to look at the functions, not the colors, because of the reason explained above.
