I have a great solution for a similar method that will work. Unfortunately, I checked with Rhino-Rack and they cannot confirm whether any of their pioneer platforms like the Rhino-Rack Pioneer Platform Roof Tray - Aluminum - 76" Long x 49" Wide # RR45TB will fit your 2000 Nissan Xterra.

If you have factory crossbars or raised rails on your 2000 Nissan Xterra, we unfortunately do not carry a platform-style rack that is confirmed work with your crossbars (made by any manufacturer). However, for the best bet, I recommend the Yakima MegaWarrior Large Roof Rack Cargo Basket - Steel - 52" Long x 48" # Y07080. With the MegaWarrior, you will get the opportunity to store cargo on your roof just like the Rhino-Rack platform. The MegaWarrior comes with a 130 pound maximum weight capacity. In order to determine whether your roof and crossbars can hold that much weight, I recommend confirming your roof weight capacity in your owner's manual.

If you have raised factory rails, you will need a roof rack system to accommodate the MegaWarrior. For a compatible system, I recommend the following parts:
