When installing the Draw-Tite Hitch # 76288 on your 2021 BMW X5 (without the M Sport package), you first need to use a 13mm socket to remove 2 nuts from the exhaust (1 each side). Next, you will disconnect the back-up sensor wiring and hands free sensor. In order to access the top mounting fasteners, you need to lower the tailgate. Once you have completed the rest of the installation steps, you will re-install the sensors. You will still be able to use the sensor with the hitch installed (although you may need to swing your foot around the sensor area a bit more than before to activate it). I attached a screenshot of the installation process from the installation manual.
If you are looking to tow a vehicle, the Pro Series Adjustable 3-Ball Mount for 2" Hitches # 63070 is a simple solution. It's a great choice because it allows for a variety of trailer heights and coupler sizes for convenience and flexibility. I also recommend a 4-way wiring harness like the Curt Powered Tail Light Converter Kit with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C56190KIT. The Curt 4-way will provide your trailer with brake light and turn signal functionality.
