Troubleshooting 2006 Dodge Durango Wiring Issue While Using Harness # 118390

Question:

Hi i installed part 118390 wiring for 2006 dodge durango and after installation everything work correctly except when i turn on the headlights only the passenger side rear lights come on. Im wondering if you have any ideas why this would have happen, or if this is a common problem? Everything else works on the driver side reverse, brake, hazards and turn signals. Just not the lights when i turn on my headlights and that is kind of a problem. Thanks for the help.

I have two ideas to help with wiring on your 2006 Dodge Durango. My first idea is the most likely and it is normally pretty easy to find and fix.

Idea#1:If your issue is happening ONLY when the trailer is connected then most likely you have a grounding issue.You will want to make sure that the trailer connector is clean and corrosion free. From there move on to checking the grounds on the trailer. Trailer lights usually ground through the mounting studs. The main ground from the connector should be attached to the trailer frame. All grounds should be attached to clean and corrosion free bare metal surfaces.

A side note: If your light brackets are bolted to the frame (not welded) then this could be a possible source of a bad ground and you will need to check the connections at the driver side lights. Sometimes, a plastic license plate holder even causes a ground issue.

You will also want to look for any loose connections, pinched wires, or any wiring with cracked or worn insulation that would allow the copper conductor to come into contact with the trailer frame and short out.

Moving on to idea #2: If this is happening when the trailer is NOT connected then you probably have a short within your vehicle wiring. The # 118390 harness has a powered converter that requires a direct connection to the vehicle battery. No other 12 volt source should be used. Be sure to disconnect the negative battery terminal as stated in the instructions.

At this point you may want to disconnect the aftermarket harness and check the pins for bent or damaged ones. When you put it back together, make sure that they are pushed all the way together and locked in place.
