Options for Carrying More than 2 Bikes with a 2012 Volkswagen Golf with a Class I Hitch

You are correct, anytime you are using a Class I hitch you should never put more than 2 bikes on a bike rack on that hitch. Even if the rack you have is a quality rack that can carry 3 or 4 bikes. The issue is not the bike rack it is the hitch/vehicle.

It just does not have the capacity to carry the additional weight, plus the increased leverage of having the weight further out away from the hitch.

In most cases it is not the hitch that will bend when overloaded, it is actually where it installs on the vehicle that will get damaged.

You only real option for carrying additional bikes would be to get a roof rack and roof rack mounted bike racks.

For a complete roof rack I recommend the Inno Aero Bar Roof Rack # INXB123-130, # INXS250, and # INK853. This will give you a complete kit that has aero bars for less wind noise and compatibility with most accessories.

And then for bike racks you could get Yakima FrontLoaders part # Y02103. This is a great wheel mounted bike rack with adjustable arms that will fit on any tire and has a lockable cable to deter thieves from taking your bikes.
