Can you Use the Thule Outrigger with the Thule Square Bars Available for the 2018 Honda CR-V

Updated 04/06/2021 | Published 04/03/2021

Question:

I want to add a Thule outrigger extender bar for my kayak to my SquareBar which has a slot along bottom of each end. My square bar is on my tower Fit Kit 3166 on a 2018 Honda CRV. I’m told my setup is incompatible with adding the 847 outrigger extender bar. My dealer doesn’t have a solution. I’m wondering if I can change my square bars to the older style without the slot and fit that older square bar into my existing Fit Kit 3166 and then add the extender bar. What solution can you offer? The extender bar enables much easier loading of the kayak up to the roof. From there I have several choices for kayak holders which attach to square bars. Thanks

I have a possible solution for you.

First, though, if you have the Thule Fit Kit 3166, part # THKIT3166, for the 2018 Honda CR-V, then you have the Rapid Podium Feet, part # TH460R.

These feet are compatible with the Thule AeroBlade, WingBar Evo, SquareBar Evo, and ProBar load bars. Using the older style of Square Bars will not work because the feet require that slot in order to mount the crossbar.

If you happen to have between 4" and 8" of your crossbar extended past the feet, you could use the Thule Hullavator Pro, part # TH898, instead of the Outrigger. This kayak carrier is compatible with square bars and has a load assist that uses gas struts to make loading the kayak a breeze. I've linked to a video review of this kayak carrier for your cosnideration.
