Trailer Hitch Carrier With Ramp For 1978 Dodge Tradesman Class B Camper Van

Question:

You have said that a carrier with a ramp should not be used behind an RV. Would that also apply to a class B camper van 78 Dodge Tradesman hauling bicycles and a small generator?

For your 78 Dodge Tradesman Camper Van I recommend Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE2 Bike Rack w/ Cargo Carrier for 2 Bikes - 2" Hitch Item # HR1450Z-85

The carrier basket is 52-1/2" long x 15-9/16" wide x 6" deep and the total weight capacity with bikes is 220lbs

If your generator and bikes are going to put you over that weight then I recommend the Reese 32x48 Cargo Carrier # PS10401-10402. The Van's suspension system is much better equipped to handle the strain than a trailer/RV so this will be better supported.

You'll need an extension that you'll be able to hook a bike rack on so I recommend the Curt Dual Hitch Extender for 2" Trailer Hitches - 8" Extension Item # D-192 . An important note with using this extender is that it will reduce the hitch capacity by 50 percent.

For the bike rack I recommend the Rhino-Rack 2 Bike Rack - 2" Hitches - Tilting Item # RRRBC045

With the added weight on the rear axel I also recommend enhancing your rear suspension which you can do with Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System Item # TUR350.
