Question:
Want to confirm the proper kit to wire this car. My mechanic and the VW dealer have both declined to wire this car, something about new and sensitive system. Please confirm the proper kit.

The 2012 Volkswagen Golf has a pulse width modulation wiring system. It sends varying pulses of power along one wire to operate the different lighting functions of the tail lights. There are wiring harnesses that will work with this type of system.
I recommend the Tekonsha ZCI Circuit Protected Vehicle Wiring Harness # 119250KIT because it will not require you to cut or splice into your vehicle's wiring harness. It uses zero-contact interface sensors to identify current flowing through the wire and activate the correct lights on the trailer. Since the harness does not cut into the factory wiring, it will not cause feedback or interference on your vehicle's wiring system. For your Golf, you will use the wiring code BT instructions in the linked installation manual.
You will use the included circuit tester to test the wires behind the tail lights while someone goes through the various light functions (brake lights, left turn signal, right turn signal, and running lights). Then you will make the connections according to the instructions I have linked for you.
