Installation of 4-Way to 5-Way Adapter on 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe

Published 05/07/2020

Question:

Unfortunately my Hyundai has the reverse lights in the rear hatch. I understand that may require tapping into the circuit under the headliner. However, I also have the factory installed towing package plugs (which is what the existing 4-pole kit is plugged into under the left rear of the vehicle). What I am wondering, prior opening up that area and testing the wires to the factory plugs, is whether the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe factory towing plugs are wired for 5-pole or 7-pole, or if they are just 4-pole - if you know or have access to the wiring diagram. Thanks

The Adapter 4-Pole to 5-Pole Trailer Wiring Adapter - Shorter # 47515 will connect to your current 4-way wiring harness and you will run the blue wire behind your tail light to connect to the reverse light power wire. The reverse light bulb socket will be fairly obvious as it leads to the clear lens. The Quick-Splice connector makes this easy. I've attached a video to assist.

The factory tow package wiring does not have the 5-way or 7-way integrated into that connection harness. You will need to trace your wiring or use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to probe wires to determine the correct circuit for connection. Unfortunately, I don't have a wiring diagram for your vehicle so this is the option we would take in our shop to ensure proper connection. You may need an additional length of wire, so I recommend using # 16-1-1 sold by the foot.
