Troubleshooting Install of Hayes Air Trailer Brake Controller that Caused Trailer Lights to Light Up
Published 04/08/2020 >
Question:
Why would this make the brake lights on a 2019 Freightliner M2 106 be constantly illuminated? It was wired correctly and plumbed correctly from upfitter Altec, Inc. and I found turning the knob fully CCW would illuminate the brake lamps. I turned the knob approximately 1/2 turn CW, and the lights went out. This worked for about 30 minutes. When I cut the 4 wires from the controller, they went out and work as they should. Thinking its a faulty controller, but am not sure. Please advise when you get time. Thank you.

It's possible the controller is faulty but what my first thought was is that there's a short on the wiring for the controller which is causing voltage to back feed on the red wire of the controller and light up your brake lights. Try connecting the controller again and make sure there isn't any exposed wire touching and if the problem persists then the controller is at fault but if you see the problem go away that would indicate you had a wiring short problem.
