Could Third Brake Light Be Added to 1991 Chevy Silverado

Updated 03/16/2020 | Published 03/14/2020

Question:

Ive been pulled over a couple times for my 1991 Chevy Silverado having a faulty higb mount brake light. I keep telling them that its a cargo light and doesnt come with a third brake light. The cop today kept telling me my truck didnt come factory with a cargo light and that someone changed it to the cargo light. Whats retarded is that we are the original owners and it came with the cargo light. How can i prove to the future cops that pull me over that my cargo light is factory and didnt come as a third brake light?

In 1986 the third brake law went into effect for passenger vehicle but it wasn't implemented for trucks until 1994 which is why your truck didn't have one from the factory. It might not be a terrible idea to have a copy of the law change on hand to show a police officer as needed.

Another option might be to just add a third brake light like with the Optronics Stremline LED part # STL80RB that you could install below or above the cargo light. It may not be and ideal solution but it might prevent you from some unnecessary police stops and also might make you less likely to get rear ended.
