Will the Yakima HoldUp # Y02433 Work with Class I Receiver on 2012 Nissan Juke

Updated 06/08/2012 | Published 06/07/2012

Question:

I just purchased a Yakima hold up hitch mount bike rack and want to use on both our FJ cruiser and our new Nissan Juke. The FJ has a 2inch hitch and I would want the same 2inch hitch on our new Juke. Would this set up work for both vehicles?

Although the Yakima HoldUp is an excellent bike rack, it will not work with the 1-1/4 inch receiver opening that the Class I receiver for the Nissan Juke uses.

Yakima offers a replacement shank, part # Y80126 that converts the 2 inch shank to a 1-1/4, but like all of the Yakima bike racks, it is not Class I compatible.

The Class I receiver has a very low towing and tongue weight capacity, and because the HoldUp is relatively heavy and extends fairly far rearward from the receiver, the leverage applied to the receiver could damage the hitch and the vehicle, potentially causing the loss of the rack and bikes carried on it during transit. For this reason, Hidden Hitch and Draw-Tite actually punch a stop into their Class I receivers to prevent any Class II accessory from being slid far enough into the receiver for the hitch pin to be secured.

Unfortunately, your best bet would be to use a different rack on your Juke. The Yakima Trailhead, part # S63360 is a bargain priced rack that is compatible with a Class I receiver, and would work well with your Juke. If you do not already have a hitch for your Juke, for FWD models, I would recommend the Curt # C11302. For AWD models, go with the Draw-Tite # 24867.
