To install the Draw-Tite # 24935 on a 2020 Subaru BRZ, the rear bumper cover and bumper beam must indeed be temporarily removed so the hitch can be sandwiched between the beam and the structure of the chassis. The print I provided from the linked installation instructions should give you an idea of how the hitch fits on the vehicle.
