I reached out to my contact at Curt and he said for your 1996 Ford F-150 the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13902 would require some pretty significant modifications on the truck for installation. Even when considering that the actual custom-fit options for your F-150 also require drilling into the frame rails, he does not recommend this multi-fit option for your truck unless it's an absolute emergency (just need to mount something in a pinch). He has installed the hitch before and it's not a fun experience.
He said a much better option for your F-150 is with a direct/custom fit hitch like the Curt # 14001 if you have the standard or step bumper or part # C13099 if you have the deepdrop bumper. Either option will require you to drill the necessary holes in the frame rails but the included instructions will accurately guide you and are written specifically for your truck.
I have included the manuals below that you can also look through.
