How to Remote Mount Atwood RV Water Heater # AT96117

Updated 02/04/2020 | Published 02/03/2020

Question:

How do you turn on the electric heating element on this unit? Ive look at the schematics and pics. Looks like there is a switch on the back of the unit. 1 Is this switch used to turn on the electric heating element? 2 Is this switch a relay switch or direct acting on the 110 hot leg? 3 Can that switch be moved and remote mounted? Id like to be able to turn on the electric hot water heating element from the front of the trailer. I will not have easy access to the back of the water heater once installed. If it can be remote mounted, do you have a clear wire schematic for moving/remote mounting the switch? The manual has schematics, but they look like they are for the DSI unit. Your web page also calls out the need for dual switches, Im assuming this is also for the DSI. Its not clear if you can move or need a switch for the manual pilot unit.

The on/off switch at the back of the Atwood RV Water Heater # AT96117 is what will supply 12VDC power to the water heater for electric operation.

In order to remote mount the water heater like you described you can add the Double-Panel On/Off Switch # AT91230 to your setup. This will be wired to the water heater and battery and can be mounted to the wall inside your trailer for easy access. The dual switches will let you power the gas burner and electric component independently.

I have attached a wiring diagram for the switch below that you can use for reference.
