Could High Altitude Jets be Used in 4,500 Watt RV Generator at Lower Altitudes

Published 12/02/2019

Question:

Ill be running our generator entirely on propane. When at higher elevations, will I still need to rejet the engine, or is that only for gasoline? It seems like the propane regulator would do the elevation compensation, but Im not sure.

You'll have to match the jets with the elevation you plan to use the etrailer generator part # 333-0004 in. If there was one jet kit that would work in higher and lower elevations we would have installed it in the generator, but the reality is that with elevation changes there is also a large change in air density so you have to have the correct jets to allow the engine of the generator to function properly. At higher altitudes the air is thinner so you need jets that allow more air into the air to fuel mix whereas at lower altitudes the air is denser which means you need to lower the amount of air volume to pass through.

If you run high altitude jets at lower elevations the engine will run too lean which will cause potential engine failure.

So when you are between 6,000 and 8,000 feet above sea level you'll need to run the # 333-335717005 but when below that you'll need to switch to the jets that came with the generator.

This is exactly what I expected the answer to be, but wanted to make sure. So to summarize, when I get ready to buy this generator, I also need to budget for the 3k – 6k and 6k – 8k jets. Do you have any that would be useful for above 8000’? I didn’t see any, but it wouldn’t be the first time I missed something in plain view!

Yes, you will also need to go with the # 333-335717004 for 3,000 to 6,00 as well if you'll ever need the generator at that altitude range. We don't have anything for above 8,000 feet though.

Using propane as a fuel source still requires the jet kits. The jets are needed regardless of whether you use propane or gasoline.
