Can 16 Passenger Wheel Be Used on Cargo Trailer

Published 11/13/2019

Question:

I am in need of a trailer rim and tire. I found your company and you have many choices to choose from, But, I am distracted/ interested in an aftermarket wheel made by another company... My concern is... Some information on your site and others seem to deter from aftermarket wheels AS trailer wheels! I largely understand loads and also understand the 0inch offset keeps the weight of the trailer and load centered over the middle, but am I really going to hurt myself with a wheel that is 4X4 truck based with a -13 offset on a 6X12 Cargo trailer used to carry under 1000 lbs. I am sure you may not want to encourage me to buy elsewhere and there is no guarantee I will buy these aftermarket wheels, but I am tired of seeing the same 5 - 10 styles on trailers. So the ultimate question is... Can a good quality aftermarket wheel with a low +/- offset work on the above described trailer! If not please advise why as I would never want to risk safety on the road!

A passenger vehicle aftermarket wheel can be used on a trailer as long as whatever offset it provides doesn't negatively affect trailer or wheel well clearances and the bolt pattern matches your hubs. The stance against using passenger wheels on trailers isn't quite as strict as using passenger tires (which I definitely don't recommend).

If the wheel physically fits onto the hub without issue and it's properly rated for the trailer weight this is okay to do.

With that being said we do have a nice selection of sleek-looking trailer wheels that definitely don't adhere to the boring appearance you might be used to seeing on trailers. The 16" HWT Aluminum Hi-Spec # AM22657 that you were looking at is a great example of this and it features an aluminum construction for rust resistance as well.

The the Viking Series # AX02660655BMMFL are really nice looking 16" trailer wheels with this 6 on 5-1/2" bolt pattern (at least in my opinion). I have attached short video reviews on this option that you can check out, along with a link that will take you to our complete 16" wheel selection.
