Best Trailer Towing Setup for 2019 BMW X5

Updated 10/24/2019 | Published 10/23/2019

Question:

We would like to tow a small trailer with our 2019 BMW X5 (it is not the M model) but aren't entirely sure what it is we need. We know we need a hitch and some wiring for the lights. Can you recommend the best set up for towing with this car?

The best towing setup for your 2019 BMW X5 starts with a trailer hitch, like you said, and for that the best option is easily the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 76288 because it is the strongest hitch for your vehicle, with a 7,200 lb towing capacity and 720 lb tongue weight and does not require any drilling to install, it simply bolts onto your frame.

The next thing you'll need is a wiring harness, the ZCI Circuit Protected Vehicle Wiring Harness # 119250KIT, which is great because it simply clamps onto your BMW's tail light wiring, so you don't have to do any type of messy splicing. The next thing you'll need is a ball mount, and I recommend checking out the Rapid Hitch Adjustable, Aluminum Ball Mount Kit w/ 2 Zinc Balls - 4" Drop or Rise Item # AM3462 which gives you up to 4" of rise or drop or # AM3411 which gives you up to 6-1/2” of rise or 5-1/2" drop. Both of these ball mounts can be adjusted in 1” increments to ensure you can tow level, and they come with a 1-7/8" hitch ball and 2" hitch ball to pair with your trailer's coupler.

You can use the link to the help article on ball mounts I've added to determine if this kit will give you the correct amount of drop or rise. If it does not, I have also added a link to our entire selection of ball mounts that fit a 2” hitch.
