What Would Cause Tow Dolly Setup to Skid Tires When Stopping in Rain

Published 10/18/2019

Question:

I have 2002 pleasure way class b motor home on a dodge 3500 chassis. I tow a fiat suv 2800lbs on a two wheel dolly. Everything was fine until I ran into rain. When I applied the brakes with moderate pedal pressure, the front wheels started skid. Question is...Did the weight of the trailer lift the weight off the front wheels causing wheels to lock? If so should I have had more air in the air bags to lift rear so to put more weight on the front axle?

A tow dolly would not put an excessive amount of tongue weight on your hitch to unweight the front axle. But since it does add towing weight without any tongue weight that would explain your traction issue. This is why it's very important that the tow dolly have brakes so help stop the setup so that you don't end up not being able to stop in an emergency.

Our tow dollies like the Demco Kar Kaddy part # DM9713046 have disc brakes which actuate with an included surge brake coupler to powerfully stop the towing setup if ever needed. I believe you issue is that you either don't have brakes on your tow dolly, they aren't hooked up, or they are just weak.
