Is the only difference the gloss finish on the X2 versus matte finish on X4?

You are correct. The big difference between the X2 and X4 Revolver covers is the finish. The X4 has a matte finish and the X2 has a gloss finish. Aside from that they are the exact same. If it were me I'd go with the matte finish. The glossy finish could create a glare as you are looking out the back window. But it's personal preference.
So if you have a long bed truck the X2 you'd want is the part # BAK39311 or for the X4s you'd want # BAK77ZR.
If you have a short bed truck you'd want # BAK39310 for an X2 or # BAK79310 for an X4.
