I took a look at the online version of the owners manual for your 1997 Nissan Pathfinder 4x4 and it does state that the manual transmission model can be towed using a dolly with the rear wheels on the ground. Nissan recommends staying below 60 mph and not traveling more than 500 miles.
I do still recommend verifying this information in your copy of the owner's manual or by checking with a local Nissan dealer.
If you don't yet have a tow dolly I really like the Demco Kar Kaddy 3 # DM9713046, which features a hydraulic braking system for easy and efficient stopping, a tilting bed frame to ease the loading/unloading process, and a 4,800 pound weight capacity. I have attached a short video demonstration that you can check out as well.
