Simple, Clean and Temporary Solution To Top Off Trailer Battery

Published 08/22/2019

Question:

I would like to charge a camper battery from my car. Normally the battery would be charged by a solar panel. On the occasion that the solar panel has not produced enough, I would like a simple, clean and temporary way of using the charging system in my car. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

There are a couple options for you to charge the battery when the solar power panels have not produced enough to charge the battery. However, there is not going to be a temporary way to charge the battery from your vehicle's battery.

If you wanted to truly charge the battery from your vehicle's battery, you would want to use something like the Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger # 331-BCDC1240D, which is designed to connect to the solar panel and the vehicle's alternator to charge the auxiliary battery. The Redarc charger does require wiring to the vehicle's alternator to charge the trailer battery so it is not considered a temporary solution.

The most temporary and clean solution that I have for you is the Goal Zero Yeti 150 Solar Generator part # 287-22004 and a CTEK MULTI US 25000 High-Capacity 12-Volt Battery Charger with Pulse Maintenance and Backup Power part # CTEK56674 to plug into the power station and then connect the trailer battery to top it off. You would just need to make sure to charge the power station with AC power before you go on a trip. This is the cleanest and most simplistic solution we have available.
