Can I use 20k Safety Chains with the Reese 16k Goosebox?

Question:

Do the Reese 20k lbs safety chain clasps fit the 16k lbs Reese Goose Box hitch. Looking for a little extra safety connection between the hitch and truck in case of a hitch or ball failure.

Expert Reply:

Because the bolts used to attach the chains to the pin box are different sizes on the 16k and 20k, the Reese 20k safety chains # RP49151 are not directly compatible with the 16k Goosebox.

However, after speaking with my source at Reese, we determined that it won't be an issue if you just match the bolt sizes up with your Goosebox. The 16k chains # 49150 use a 1/2" diameter bolt and the 20k chains use a 9/16" bolt, so depending on the bolt hole size on your Goosebox (which is probably 1/2" based on it being a 16k hitch) you'll just need to find a Grade 8 bolt with a 1/2" diameter in order to use the 20k chains on your 16k Goosebox.
