Stability of Curt Cargo Basket C18115-117 on Rola Roof Rack 59786 on 2014 Chevy Equinox LT2

Updated 06/11/2019 | Published 06/09/2019

Question:

I am considering purchasing a Rola roof rack, part #59786 for my 2014 Chevrolet Equinox, LT2. It has factory roof rails like image #2. I want to purchase this specifically for a roof cargo basket carrier. Im looking at the 62inch Curt model. After taking some measurements I determined the curved shape of roof and rails will cause the rear crossbar to be about 10mm lower than the front. I would like a level mounting surface for the Curt roof cargo basket. I dont want it to look like it is not parallel with the circumference of the roof and I want it close to level. Im worried the wind will catch the anything Im hauling and put a lot of upward stress on it. Does this model adjust up/down or come with spacers? I noticed that Rhinorack sells 10mm spacer blocks which bolt in between the feet and the cross bar raising the height of the crossbar, but that system also costs twice as much. Hoping this system can meet my needs. Thanks for your help!

When using a rooftop cargo basket like Curt's 62 x 37-inch model # C18115-117 on a vehicle roof rack like the Rola # 59786 the single most important consideration is of course safety/stability so I do understand your thinking. Your photos did not come through but I reviewed images of your vehicle and its raised side rails and you do not need to be concerned about any slight pitch in the Curt carrier. This will not cause any instability in the carrier or its loaded cargo.

Your roof side rails may have markings to indicate where crossbars should be attached for maximum weight capacity and strength; if present these guides should be followed. But please do note that the Curt basket # C18115-117 does require that these two crossbars have a specific center-to-center spacing, either 15, 22 or 29-inches apart on center. I suggest you check your side rails for crossbar placement markings and also note these three spacing distances to be sure you will be happy with where the rack and basket will ultimately be located on the Equinox roof.

When you drive with your loaded basket there will not be much of any force pushing upward. The basket's own 40-lb weight and its secure mounting clamps eliminate this concern and open air flow under and around the basket will actually help reduce wind noise. Your cargo can be kept secure by using appropriate cargo control items with the basket, such as a cargo net like # C18201 or cam-buckle straps like # E98876-4. Another item I strongly recommend is a simple inexpensive folding step # TE97FR which pops open when a foot of extra reach is helpful for loading and unloading.
