Question:

I have a 2011 Honda CR-V. My book says my car weighs about 3400 pounds. I want to buy a 1995 tow lite 20 ft hi lo compact camper. It weighs about 2200 pounds. Can my car tow this? I dont understand all the stuff about gross vehicle weight etc. Help

I took a look at the owner's manual of your 2011 Honda CR-V and it says that the "maximum allowable weight of the trailer and everything in or on it must not exceed 1,500 lbs" so that would be the most a trailer and all its cargo can weigh.

If you do find a camper with a GVWR of 1,500 lbs or less you could tow it but would need to start with a trailer hitch and I highly recommend the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 75547 because it is a no-drill installation and the company has a strong reputation for making very high-quality trailer hitches. The accompanying photo is of this hitch installed on an '11 CR-V and I have added a link to a video showing the hitch being installed on this vehicle.

You will also need to add a wiring harness in order to power your trailer's lights and the best option is the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118427 because we have found these to be the most reliable harnesses. I have added a link to a video install of this connector being put on a 2011 Honda CR-V for you to check out.

I also recommend checking out Ball Mount Kit # 989900, which is for 2” hitches and may fulfill your towing needs in one tidy package; two ball mounts - one with a 3/4” rise or 2” drop and the other with a 2-3/4” rise or 4” drop – along with a 1-7/8” hitch ball, a 2” hitch ball, and a pin and clip.

You can use the link to the help article on ball mounts I've added to determine if this kit will give you the correct amount of drop or rise.
