Question:

in one pick i saw the net stretched over boxes in the back of a full size pickup, which is what i am needing. will the 40x36 stretch enough to accommodate?

There is a stretchable cargo net that will work with your 5 foot bed but when I contacted Thule they told me the Thule Cargo Net # TH692 would not be able to fit a 5 foot truck bed.

Instead I highly recommend checking out the Spidy Gear Luggage Webb Cargo Net which is 50" x 40" but will stretch up to 72" x 45".
