I went out to our warehouse to measure the Extendable Hitch Mounted Step # 288-08400 that you referenced and found that the square tube the step is attached to is 1-1/2 inches x 1-1/2 inches.

This is a really nice hitch step that features a durable steel construction, a pivoting design that allows it to be folded away when not in use, and a 500 pound weight capacity. I have attached a short video demonstration that you can also check out.
