Do Brake Controllers Need to be Mounted to Vehicles

Question:
Can the brake controller be left unmounted? I have a new truck and have not trailered before so I dont know what would b the optimal location to mount the controller and i dont want to start drilling holes in my new truck. Thanks,

From a functional point of view the Tekonsha PowerTrac part # 39523 will work just fine not permanently mounted since it is a time-delayed controller. If it was a proportional controller that needs to be orientated in a specific way this would not be the case.
Since you need to be able easily reach the manual override lever at any given point while towing I have to recommend you mount it or at least store it in a cubby hole (if possible) so that you could access it quickly. If you ever find yourself in a situation where a trailer wants to start swaying you can put an end to that pretty quickly by sliding the lever partially and it basically pulls the trailer straight.
