Do Weight Distribution Spring Bars Wear Out Over Time

Question:
Can the round bars on a weight distribution hitch go bad? Meaning can they bend and loose their strength? 2 years ago I was hooking up to the 3rd link of the chain, and now this last year I was hooking to the 5th link. Is that typical?

I wouldn't say it's common, but it is possible that a set of round bars could lose their rigidity over time. To put it in perspective though this would be the first time we've seen it happen. If the head of your weight distribution system changes angles to also adjust spring bar tension I'd check to make sure that setting hasn't changed. Also the rear suspension of your tow vehicle may be wearing out too which would cause you to need more spring bar tension so I'd check that out as well.
