Installing an Aftermarket Trailer Brake Controller on a 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 with Factory Controller

Published 11/18/2011

Question:

I saw an answer to converting from factory contoller to external brake controller. can you email me more specifics on how to dissconect factory unit and install external unit? Do you have to run a new set of wires to the back of the truck plug to bypass the computer controlling the braking power or motion of the trailer. So it would be like the old times with and older truck? Thank You

To install an aftermarket brake controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy, you will have to disconnect the Integrated Trailer Brake Module. Doing so will turn on a warning lamp on the instrument cluster. In order to disconnect the ITBM and not get the warning lamp, your local Dodge dealer will have to reconfigure the TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module), of the truck. Once the TIPM has been reconfigured, and the ITBM has been unplugged, you can use a vehicle specific brake control harness.

To disconnect the ITBM, you will need to contact Business Center to remove the sales code (XHC). The TIPM will need to be reconfigured. Once the sales code has been disabled you can disconnect the ITBM electrical connector, under the dash, without getting the warning lamp.

You can then use the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers, # 3021-P with the Prodigy. I have incldued links to an FAQ article and a link to the instructions for the harness. You will not need to run different wires back to the 7-Way.
