Installing Trailer Hitch in 2011 Chevy Equinox With Rusted Weld Nuts

Updated 11/05/2018 | Published 11/04/2018

Question:

Hello - 2011 Chevy Equinox. The M12-1.75 supplied take 3 turns then locks up. Ive first soaked holes with lubricate then used a battery post cleaner. Turn post cleaner in / out in same directions as threads. Possibly all welds are rusted to extend cleaning not working. Feel needs a more drastic form of cleaning. Was thinking of using a same size M-12-1.75 drill tape. First lube drill tape. Then not to use a drill but to go slowly with a ratchet in and out. Biggest concern not to bogus the threads completely. Have any suggestions most appreciated. See the last pic Thank You

It sounds like you have followed the proper procedure (which can also be found in the linked help article) to clean the weld nuts in your 2011 Chevy Equinox when trying to install Draw-Tite hitch # 36408. From your description and the photo you sent it does not look as if the threads are completely stripped so your suggestion of using drill tape can work.

If it turns out that does not work you will need to locally source a thread tap and bolts the next size up which will allow you to install the hitch.
