Best Support for Bow of Boat Carried on Ladder Rack on 2018 Ford F-150 Super Crew 5-1/2-Foot Bed

Question:

I recently purchased apex rack for the bed of my truck to haul a 18 foot Adirondack guideboat. About 250 lbs. I put it up on the Apex, but the front of the boat wanted to rest on my truck roof. So I need probably a roof rack with crossbars that are the same height as my Apex rack on the bed. possible adjustable height? Or maybe you have a better option. Thanks.

My research indicates that Apex offers both over-the-cab ladder racks like the Thule TracRac Universal Steel Rac # TH91000 and also standard 2-bar racks like the T-Rac Pro2 Truck Bed Ladder Rack # TH37002XT. I presume you have one of the standard 2-bar racks.

You have the option of installing a roof rack on your F-150's super-crew cab to help support the bow of the boat. The Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero rack # RR29XR offers a sleek appearance and quiet performance thanks to its aerodynamic-shape crossbars. The tops of these bar will be approximately 3-inches above your cab roof.

Another option is to use a foam block to cushion the boat's bow. This is a lower cost alternative to the full roof rack and softer foam material will probably do a better job of protecting the wooden boat. We offer many such foam carriers that you can see on the linked page. You might prefer the adjustable model # SR5527 from SportRack whose width you can match to the boat's hull profile by sliding them along their base. Straps are included to secure the block to your cab roof. Or for a single foam block you can use Darby part # DTA924 which can be used alone or with single bar rack # DTA968.

You might care to use some additional tie down ropes such as # 317-404400 or # 317-403420.
