Question:
My new Discovery came with a tow package. It is pre-wired with a 4 pin and 7 pin adapter. I will be towing a trailer with electric brakes. Does the Discovery have a brake controller built in or do I need to purchase a separate brake controller? From what I understand, the Discovery will control my trailers brakes without the need of any additional equipment.

Since you have a 7-Way installed at the rear of your 2017 Land Rover Discovery you will only need a few more components to complete a brake controller install on your vehicle. I couldn't find any info on whether or not your vehicle could have came equipped with a brake controller. If it had one you'd most likely see it's display or button/knobs on the dash of your vehicle.
First let's start with a brake controller. I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to set up.
Next, for a wiring kit to install the brake controller and the 7-way adapter you would want the Wiring Kit for 2 and 4 Brake Electric Brake Controllers # 5506. This will provide the power source and ground for the wiring for the brake controller. You will need to test the wires from the brake pedal switch of your vehicle to find a circuit that has voltage when the brakes are applied and none when not applied. This will be the circuit you will run the red wire to.
Finally you will need to run a length of 10 gauge wire (part # 10-1-1) from the brake output circuit of the controller to the brake output circuit of the 7-way (blue wire). The # 10-1-1 is sold by the foot so you will need to order a quantity of the amount of feet you will need.
I attached an FAQ on installing brake controllers for you to check out.
