Question:
I am thinking about adding a trailor hitch to my car as I could be moving from FL to PA. If I do move I plan on towing a 5 x 8 rental trailor. What hitch and equipment ball, wiring, etc do I need and can I install it myself? Im pretty handy...

For towing a small utility trailer, I would recommend the Draw-Tite Class I Receiver, part # 24827.
You would also need a trailer wiring harness with 4-pole trailer connector, part # 118484.
Although many trailer rental companies use adjustable couplers on their trailers, it would not be a bad idea to give them a call and ask what size trailer ball you will need. If you should need a 1-7/8 inch ball, use part # 19256. For a 2 inch ball, use part # 19258.
You will want to keep in mind that the only hitch class available for your Scion is a Class I. The Class I receiver has a fairly low towing/tongue weight capacity, at 2000 lb towing and 200 lb tongue weight. This means that the entire weight of the trailer and its contents can weigh no more than 2000 lbs and the maximum downward force that can be exerted on the hitch ball is 200 lbs. It also would be a good idea to check your owners manual for the actual towing capacity of the vehicle. Although the capacity of the hitch is 2000 lbs, the vehicle towing capacity could be lower. A towing system is only as strong as its lowest rated component.
The majority of our customers do their own installations. I looked over the instructions for the hitch and the wiring harness, and both installations are pretty straightforward. A relatively handy person should be able to handle the install with no problem.
