Question:
Hi, I have been told that I can not install a Weight distribution hitch and sway control system on my 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee Ltd. because it has a Unibody frame. Does that make sense to you? I see several 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee Ltd. with Weight distribution hitch and sway control systems installed on your site. regards

Weight distribution (WD) and sway control products rely on leverage to work properly, which requires the body of the vehicle to be rigid enough to withstand the force. Unibody vehicles are typically not as strong or rigid and therefore cannot typically handle the same loads and stresses of a body-on-frame or ladder-style frame vehicle when it comes to towing and using WD or sway control.
The unibody structure is popular because it helps reduce weight and improves ride quality and fuel economy. So, it's not going anywhere. Engineering and material capabilities continue to improve each year, and unibody vehicles continue to improve. We've seen this with some vehicle manufacturers whose first unibody designs were not able to use WD, but later models are now rated for use with WD. Your 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee Ltd will not have an issue with using weight distribution as long as you trailer hitch receiver is rated for it, which our 3 confirmed fit options all are; # 75699, # C13182, and # C13065.
I've attached an article on weight distribution systems to help further. If you let me know your trailer's GVWR or even more specifically the tongue weight, I can help you narrow down your options or make a recommendation for you.
