Question:
Does the valve have to be positioned vertically or can it be positioned at 45 degrees, horizontally or anywhere in between?

The Valterra EZ Valve Electric Waste Valve for RV Black Water Tank - 3" Diameter # E1003VP will have no problem with function anywhere between vertical and horizontal. You will only be restricted by the valve mounting flanges on your current system, but you have the option of replacing those to meet your needs. I've attached a video of this system to assist.
